In January, 1956, it was established as a railway vehicle manufacturing school in Dalian.
In September, 1957, it was renamed as Dalian Machine Manufacturing School.
In July, 1958, Dalian Railway Institute was established on the basis of Dalian Machine Manufacturing School.
In January, 1961, it became one of the direct subsidiaries of the Ministry of Railways and was directly governed by the Ministry of Railways.
In January, 1963, TENG Daiyuan, then Head of the Ministry of Railways, inspected the Institute and inscribed the school name of “Dalian Railway Institute”.
In January, 1982, Dalian Railway Institute became one of the first batch of higher education institutes that awarded bachelor’s degrees.
In January, 1984, Dalian Railway Institute became one of the second batch of units that awarded master’s degrees.
In August, 1992, LI Sengmao, then Member of CPC Central Committee and Head of the Ministry of Railways left an inscription, which reads: “Education should be the first in railway development”.
In September, 1996, a class opening ceremony was held for the first term of overseas students in the Institute.
In June, 1998, Dalian Railway Institute started to award doctoral degrees with the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Automation were the majors that awarded the doctoral degrees.
In February, 2000, the leadership structure was changed from dual leadership by the Ministry of Railways and Liaoning Province, with the Ministry of Railways as the dominant, into the single leadership by Liaoning Province.
In July, 2002, the Information Engineering Institute, a full-time general undergraduate college, was independently established with the approval of Liaoning Provincial Department of Education.
In October, 2002, an opening ceremony was held for the first term of the College of Software in Dalian Railway Institute.
In May, 2004, Dalian Railway Institute was renamed as Dalian Jiaotong University after obtaining approval from the Ministry of Education.
In September, 2004, WEN Shizhen, the Provincial Secretary in Liaoning, inspected the university and left an inscription, which reads: “To achieve a new leap forward by giving full play to superiority and highlighting its unique features.
In October, 2004, a ceremony for new school building in Lushun was held, and the College of Software was moved to Lushun Campus.
In November, 2005, the Modern Rail Transportation Technology Research Institute was established through cooperation between Dalian Jiaotong University and Changchun Railway Vehicles Cooperation Limited.
In April, 2006, the China-Japan Friendship Dalian Center for Human Resource Development was completed, which is a project with non-reimbursable assistance from Japanese Government , implemented and operated by Dalian Jiaotong University.
In August, 2006, the Rail Transportation Technique Institute was established after the employee training center in Shenyang Railway Bureau was incorporated into Dalian Jiaotong University in accordance with No.288 document of LJH 2006.
In October, 2006, Dalian Jiaotong University passed the proficiency assessment in undergraduate teaching work conducted by the Ministry of Education with outstanding results.
In August, 2007, Dalian Jiaotong University became the unit to set up centers for post-doctoral studies after being approved by the Ministry of Personnel and the National Post-doctoral Management Committee, and postdoctoral research centers for Mechanical Engineering, and Material Science and Engineering, were set up.
In October, 2008, the university began the construction of provincial level science park after obtaining approval from Liaoning Provincial Department of Education, as well as Science and Technology Department.
In September, 2009, the Modern Rail Transportation Research Institute in the university became the national demonstration institution of technology transformation after being approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
In October, 2009, the university’s “five-year dual-major inter-disciplinary personnel training mode” was approved as the “innovative trial plot for state-level personnel training mode”.
In March, 2010, the People’s Government of Liaoning Province and the Ministry of Railways signed an agreement for jointly sponsoring of Dalian Jiaotong University.
In September, 2010, it was recommended as the university, in which excellent graduates of this year can proceed to master’s degree and qualification of postgraduate without an examination.
In September, 2010, Lushun Campus (the second phase) was completed and put into service formally.
In December, 2011, “ research center for modern rail transportation engineering”, a significant science and technology platform in Liaoning, was approved by Liaoning Provincial Department of Education for construction.
In November, 2012, the construction of “national and local joined engineering research center for railway transportation equipment design and manufacturing technology” was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission;
In January, 2013, the Science Park in Dalian Jiaotong University was rated as national University Science Park.
